COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HOLE AND SLIT LIDS IN ACTIVE MICROBIAL AIR SAMPLING »

Perforated lid for MAS-100 microbial air samplers

BASIS FOR HIGHEST SAMPLING EFFICIENCY

The precision, robustness and material characteristics of the perforated lid have a key impact on the recovery rate and the long-term stability of the microbial air sampling results, which is why uniformity of the perforation, a perfect sealing between lid and instrument and simple handling of the sampling lid even when wearing gloves are of the utmost importance. The lids can be exchanged between different instruments without a problem, meaning you can use a microbial air sampler with one lid while a spare lid is being autoclaved. Our selection includes special stainless steel lids for integrated microbial air samplers as well as lids that enable long-term comparison of measurement data with the very first MAS-100 models. For traceability purposes, all perforated lids have been marked with a unique identification since July 2023.

  • Manufactured from anodized aluminum or stainless steel EN 1.4435 (X2CrNiMo18-14-3) according to BN2 (electropolished pharmaceutical grade) with a surface roughness of max. RA 0.8 (at all measurable points)
  • Sterilizable in autoclave, with liquid, vaporized or gaseous H2O2 and many other sporicides, bactericides and fungicides
  • Non-removable "black marking" laser identification - a machine-readable DataMatrix code and a unique serial number - enable seamless traceability in the course of quality management.
  • Bayonet lock with max. 120° angle of rotation

TRACEABLE THANKS TO UNIQUE perforated lid IDENTIFICATION

Since July 2023, our MAS-100 standard perforated lids have been provided with a non-removable marking. This marking contains information on the lid type as well as a unique serial number. This means that each individual perforated lid can be clearly identified and traced at any time as part of quality management. In addition, this prevents the use of unsuitable lids even more effectively. The marking consists of a machine-readable DataMatrix code and a letter/number combination that is readable by the user and contains the same information.

The marking is applied using the so-called "black marking" process. This recognized laser technology is used, among other things, on surgical instruments to guarantee their standard-compliant traceability via UDI codes. Due to the extremely short laser pulses, the surface of the perforated lid remains intact, which fully ensures easy cleaning and disinfection of the lid. Further advantages of "Black Marking": the marking is very dark and high-contrast, so that it is easily readable by machines. In addition, it is indelible and corrosion-resistant - and thus still easily recognizable even after many cleaning and decontamination cycles.

Please note: In the current switchover period, perforated lids without marking are still delivered from stock. If you explicitly require perforated lids with the new marking, please indicate this when ordering.

    Quick tip

Why Black Marking is used on perforated lids

WHY ARE THERE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORATED LIDS?

The original MAS-100 had a 400x0.7mm perforated lid. In the successor model MAS-100 NT a stronger blower was installed, which can overcome the higher air resistance of smaller and fewer holes of the 300x0.6mm lid. This means that the air in the holes of a 300x0.6mm lid is accelerated more strongly and impacted on the agar at a higher speed. This results in a higher separation efficiency, i.e. smaller particles can be captured in the agar.

Both sampling heads collect at 100L/min and fit mechanically on all MBV air samplers except the MAS-100 CG Ex and MAS-100 Atmos. There are two application-relevant differences:

    1) Different Feller tables must be used, as the probability that two CFUs hitting the same hole is different.

    2) The higher impaction speed of the 300x 0.6mm perforated lid leads to a better physical recovery and has therefore become the standard lid.

    300x0.6

    • Standard perforated lid
    • 300 holes with 0.6mm diameter
    • Highest sampling efficiency. Separation size d50 = 1.1µm
    • 20m/s impaction speed
    • Sampling rate of 100 litre/minute
    • Mechanical accuracy of fit with all MAS-100 air samplers (except CG Ex)
    • Applicable for MAS-100 NT, MAS-100 NT Ex and MAS-100 VF
    • Feller table

    400X0.7

    • Original perforated lid
    • 400 holes with 0.7mm diameter
    • Excellent sampling efficiency. Separation size d50 = 1.6µm
    • 11m/s impaction speed
    • Sampling rate of 100 litre/minute
    • Mechanical accuracy of fit with all MAS-100 air samplers (except CG Ex)
    • Applicable for MAS-100, MAS-100 Eco, MAS-100 VF, MAS-100 NT and MAS-100 NT Ex

MULTIPLE PERFORATED LIDS PER AIR SAMPLER

Many customers use several perforated lids for each of their air samplers. This allows, for example, the sterilization of lids while the device can be used simultaneously with other lids.  We do everything we can to ensure that you get consistent results with multiple lids on different devices: Tight connection between perforated lid and collecting head, well-thought-out design, tight production tolerances and intensive quality control are just some of them. We have summarized for you why you can use our perforated lids on different instruments.

FOR INTEGRATED MAS-100 MICROBIAL AIR SAMPLERS

Particularly high quality demands are placed on sampling heads and perforated lids within isolators and RABS. These are often very close to the product to be processed and must never be a source of contamination. That is why we manufacture our products from the best stainless steel EN 1.4435 (X2CrNiMo18-14-3) according to BN2 (electropolished pharmaceutical quality) with a surface roughness of max. RA 0.8 (at all measurable points). Our products are therefore particularly easy to clean and sterilize.

CONSISTENT RESULTS THANKS TO BEST GROWTH MEDIA

Our microbial air samplers do not require dedicated consumables. You can use all commercially available standard agar plates together with the MAS-100 air samplers.

The most repeatable results and the best collection efficiency are achieved with growth media from quality manufacturers. We recommend media from our partner Merck. An example of excellent collection efficiency can be found here.
